Paraguay were handed a difficult start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after a 4–1 defeat to the USA

The United States set the tone with their high tempo and constant pressing, and Paraguay never really looked comfortable dealing with it. They kept losing the ball in midfield, which stopped them from building any real rhythm, and most of their play ended up being reactive. Even though they did manage to get a goal in the second half, the USA stayed in control for most of the match with their pace and intensity.

From Paraguay’s point of view, the main issue wasn’t just the scoreline, but how often they lost control during important phases of the game. They were stretched too easily under pressure, and when they tried to move forward, things often broke down before they could really build any momentum. Even in the moments where they looked to step higher up the pitch, they just couldn’t turn those spells into anything sustained or dangerous.

Despite the defeat, Paraguay’s coaching setup is expected to concentrate on instant adjustments rather than long-term structural changes. One of the main priorities moving forward will be stabilising the midfield, which struggled to connect defensive recovery with attacking progression. Without improvement in this area, Paraguay risk being overrun again in their remaining group matches.

A more compact defensive shape is likely to be considered for upcoming fixtures, with emphasis on reducing space between the lines and limiting high-risk turnovers. Paraguay may also shift toward a more direct attacking approach, aiming to bypass midfield congestion and create quicker opportunities in transition rather than relying on extended build-up play.

The attacking unit, while limited in output during the match, did show brief signs of effectiveness when given space. This suggests that Paraguay’s best chances in future games may come from counter-attacking situations rather than possession-based dominance. Converting these moments will be crucial if they are to remain competitive in Group D.

Psychologically, the team now faces a must-response situation. With other group teams also collecting points early, Paraguay cannot afford another defeat if they want to stay in contention for qualification. The margin for error has already narrowed significantly after the opening match.

However, the tournament is still in its early stages, and Paraguay remain mathematically and competitively alive in the group. A strong response in their next fixture could shift momentum back in their favour, especially if defensive improvements are made quickly and attacking efficiency improves.

The path forward is clear,  defensive structure, reduced transitional errors, and takes better advantage of limited attacking opportunities. If these adjustments are executed effectively, Paraguay still has a realistic chance of reviving their World Cup campaign.
