Shifts in the Source of Emissions
Historically, major sporting events have faced scrutiny due to the construction of new stadiums. However, the 2026 World Cup aims to utilize existing stadiums, reducing construction-related emissions to just 3% of the total. The overwhelming majority of the carbon footprint is linked to spectator travel. Roughly 88% of emissions are expected to arise from fans traveling long distances to attend matches across the vast geography of the United States, Canada, and Mexico, posing logistical challenges and environmental concerns.
